Preparing for a U.S. College While in High School – For Students in Grade 9
By GPA Admin

College Timeline for Students in Grade 9

It is still early in the process for you at this point, but never too early to think about what you want to do about college, where you may want to go, what you are interested in studying, so that you can set yourself on the right path to prepare for a successful experience later.

You may begin exploring your academic interests as well as getting involved in extracurriculular activities while focusing on your studies at school.

Here are a few suggestions:

Talk to your high school teachers or a Golden Path Academics advisor about:

  • Your interest in attending college or university in the U.S.
  • Creating a college preparatory plan that includes what you may want to study and how you will work on your English language skills.
  • Keeping track of your grades and courses taken in school, aiming to keep your grades consistently above 7.5, if you would like to apply for merit-based scholarships.
  • Enrolling in Geometry and Algebra classes as well as an English language class starting in Grade 9. Most U.S. colleges have requirements in Mathematics and English language proficiency.

Create a file containing the following documents:

  • A list of awards, honors and achievements.
  • A list of all your activities and the descriptions of what you do for each of them, including volunteer and paid work.
  • A journal of things you like, subject matters that interest you or people whom you admire.

Remember that early planning and earning high grades through the High School years will widen your options when choosing a college or university! Contact us to learn more about our Golden Path College-Ready program for high school students.
