How to Register for the SAT Test

Before you begin to register for the SAT, please note that you will need to sign up for an account, then select the location and the date for the test you wish to sit for.

If you already know the test site you want to register for and the test date for that site, you can simply proceed with the registration once you have created an account. Otherwise, you can start by browsing the locations and the dates once logged in to find one most convenient for you.

Below are the step by step instructions for how to register for the SAT.

1) Register Online: The quickest and easiest method

  • Go to www.collegeboard.org and create an account for yourself.
  • Once you are able to log in, select your preferred test date and test center
  • Get immediate confirmation of registration
  • Have 24-hour access to registration to make any corrections on your admission ticket

2) Register by Mail: For certain situations, registering by mail is the only option.  These situations include:

  • Paying by check or money order, payable to “The College Board”
  • If the test taker is younger than 13 years old
  • If the test taker is registering for Sunday testing for the first time due to religious observance
  • If the test taker is also requesting that a test center be opened nearer to home
  • If the test taker is testing in Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Togo

When registering by mail:

  • Download the SAT Registration Guide from www.collegeboard.org
  • Fill out the registration/application form found in the guide
  • Carefully indicate the College Board code numbers for college majors, colleges, scholarship programs, countries, test centers or high schools by referring to the code list in your counselor’s office or to the Code Search tool in www.sat.collegeboard.org

3) Standby Registration: Standby testing for an additional fee may be possible for test takers who are not able to register in time.  For standby testing, here are the steps:

  • Download the SAT Registration Guide from www.collegeboard.org
  • Bring the registration form as well as a check or money order for all fees including the standby fee to the test center on the test day, before 7:45 am
  • Arrive early at the testing center because seating capacity for standbys is limited
  • Bring a copy of your clergy letter or Eligibility Approval letter if you are a Sunday test taker or approved for 50% extended time

*Standby testing is not available for:

  • Language tests with Listening
  • Test takers 21 years old or older on the testing day
  • Center-based testing for accommodations other than 50% extended time
  • School-based testing for students with disabilities needing special accommodations
  • Testing in Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Korea, Nigeria, Thailand, Togo or Vietnam
